Privacy policy
Last updated 4 August 2026
This policy explains what Nightjar Reads collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We keep the collection narrow on purpose: a reading site does not need much to work well.
1. Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account we store a display name, an email address, and a hashed password. We never store passwords in readable form.
Reading data. We store which novels you bookmark, which chapters you have read, your position in a chapter, and your reader preferences, so your progress follows you between devices.
Transaction records. If you buy Embers or subscribe, we keep a record of the purchase, its amount, and its date. Card details are handled by our payment processor and never reach our servers.
Technical data. Standard server logs record IP address, browser type, and pages requested. These are retained for 30 days for security and abuse prevention.
2. How we use it
To operate the service: authenticating you, syncing your library and progress, and delivering chapters you have access to.
To support you: answering questions, investigating reports, and restoring accounts.
To protect the service: detecting fraud, scraping, and attempts to bypass chapter access.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use your reading history to build advertising profiles.
3. Cookies and local storage
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in and local storage to remember reader preferences such as text size and page colour.
Analytics, where used, is limited to aggregate page-view counts without cross-site tracking.
4. Sharing
We share data only with processors that make the service run: hosting, payment processing, and email delivery. Each is bound by contract to use the data only on our instructions.
We may disclose information if legally required, or where necessary to protect the rights and safety of readers, translators, or the platform.
5. Retention and deletion
Account data is retained while your account is open. You can delete your account at any time from Settings; reading history and library entries are removed within 30 days.
Purchase records are retained for as long as tax and accounting rules require, typically seven years.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to certain processing.
To exercise any of these, write to privacy@nightjarreads.example. We respond within 30 days.
7. Children
Nightjar Reads is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Some titles carry mature-content tags and are gated accordingly.
8. Changes
If we make a material change to this policy, we will notify signed-in readers by email and post a notice on the site at least 14 days before it takes effect.
This is a demonstration front-end built for design review. The text below is representative sample copy, not legal advice, and Nightjar Reads is not a real service.
