This is the rare one where the protagonist being competent doesn't kill the tension. The obstacles just scale.
Anyone else notice the author keeps setting up payoffs four arcs early? Went back and reread and it's all there.
Same read. The phrasing in the second half makes it pretty unambiguous once you catch it.
Strong character work, restrained plotting, and an ending to the first arc that actually lands. Loses half a star for a mid-section that drags.
